Why Headshots Matter
Your headshot is often your first introduction to casting directors - it needs to capture the essence of who you are! At Photography with Danielle, we aim to create images that command attention and truly reflect the talent of each performer. A great headshot can open doors to auditions and roles, providing a visual representation of your skills and charisma.
Please note that these headshots are not required for agent representation. Agents do not requite 'portfolios' to be considered. These sessions are aimed for children and performers who already have representation and are looking to update their spotlight or model cards. Please feel free to message me if you would like advise on how to take photos to send to agents for representation.
Tips for your Headshot Session
1. Prepare for the Session
Preparation can help ease any nerves before the shoot. Encourage your child to choose outfits that reflect their personality and style - think about colours that pop on camera and make their eyes stand out. Simple, well-fitted clothing tends to work best, and avoiding busy patterns ensures the focus stays where it should: on their face!
2. Bring Out Their Personality
During the session, I’ll work to create a comfortable atmosphere that allows your child’s personality to shine through. It’s important for them to relax and be themselves in front of the camera. Natural smiles, genuine expressions, and capturing their individuality are the keys to great headshots.
3. Timing is Everything
Schedule the shoot when your child is well-rested and energised. Children are inherently unpredictable, so it's essential to embrace this nature while managing it to ensure a fun and relaxed atmosphere on shoot day. First and foremost, ensure your child is well-rested and hasn’t indulged in sugary snacks drinks before arriving. A good night’s sleep can significantly impact the success of a headshot session!
For shoot bookings, especially with younger kids, I highly recommend scheduling during weekends or school holidays. Many parents mistakenly bring children directly from tiring activities at the end of the day, leading to exhausted kids. Remember, staying calm and prepared is crucial. Treat the headshot session like an audition or a day on set; this is your child's first step in the professional performance world.
4. Consider Styling Carefully
When planning hair and outfit choices for your shoot, consider your child's age (and playing age), colouring, and personality as guiding factors. Involve your kids in the decision-making process to keep them excited and engaged and explain why you may want a certain outfit. Their comfort and happiness will shine through in the images. Dressing your child in a style that reflects their age, or even younger if they can pull that off, is one of my top tips. If you have a 10-year-old who still embodies a 6 year old, feel free to enhance that look! Pigtails and plats work wonderfully for this. Children should not wear make-up to these shoots, we would like to see a natural fresh face. For teens aged 14-17 who may be up against actors who appear younger but may not requite a chaperone or a license. If they can play down in age this may work in their favour. Think just a little lip balm and clear mascara is all they need.
Consider the different roles they may want to play and represent this in the outfits you choose, for example, a plane white top to show natural personality, a collard dress or shirt for period drams, sporty tops and a denim jacket is a great addition while changing your hairstyle for each look.
